Computing

Intent

At Kingsmoor, we intend to develop our children into safe, confident and ambitious users of technology. Computational thinking and creativity are important skills that will enable children to utilise the ever-changing technology around them, therefore we want to model positive and responsible ways for children to apply these abilities. As well as teaching specific skills in discrete ICT lessons, we embed the fundamental principles and concepts of Computing throughout the curriculum to develop their knowledge with repeated practical experience of using technology. Internet safety is a top priority within the school that is revisited frequently to ensure our children can spot dangers and use their new skills safely. We also aim to develop a passion for technology in our learners to understand how our relationship with computers will shape our futures.

Implementation

To help with our implementation of the computing curriculum, we have a variety of hardware resources available to all classes, including interactive whiteboards in every classroom, two full class sets of Chromebooks, several programmable Bee-Bots as well as two iPads that are predominantly used in the Early Years classrooms.

Early Years

Although the Computing strand has been removed from the Early Years framework, we still provide a variety of opportunities for the children to use technology in their learning. Our computing resources are incorporated into the many exciting topics that are covered throughout the year, so children are familiar with the technology before beginning more structured computing education in Key Stage 1.

Our scheme of work for Computing covers all aspects of the National Curriculum. Throughout Key Stages 1 and 2, we follow the TeachComputing scheme of work, which is designed and developed by specialist computing teachers and supported by the Department for Education.

Impact

In a society where technology is rapidly evolving, we prepare all children to use technology both at home and in school by providing a secure knowledge of digital systems. To measure the impact of our curriculum, we assess children’s ability in lessons to:

  • apply their knowledge of information technology to solve problems in their own work • write and debug their own computer programs
  • use technology safely and responsibly

The class teacher assesses children after each topic, allowing them to develop lessons further to complement the learning on a more individual level. A variety of assessment styles are used for the different topics to ensure the children’s knowledge and understanding as well practical ability are all assessed. Children complete a summative assessment at the end of some topics, whereas other topics are assessed based on a piece of digital work that the children complete during their lessons.

By the time children leave Kingsmoor, they should appreciate the impact technology has on their lives and their learning. They will be confident and excited to continue their journey with Computing as they make the transition to middle school.
